FROZEN SHOULDER

Frozen shoulder, also called adhesive capsulitis, causes pain and stiffness in the shoulder. Over time, the shoulder becomes very hard to move. It occurs in 3 stages:

FREEZING – gradual worsening of pain and loss of motion lasts for 6 – 9 weeks.
FROZEN – pain improves but stiffness continues lasts for 4 -6 months.
THAWING – shoulder movements improve and return to near normal, takes 6 months – 2years.

CAUSES

  • Diabetes
  • Immobilization – prolonged immobilization after injury or fractures

SYMPTOMS

  • Severe Pain
  • Inability to move shoulder

DIAGNOSIS

  • X- rays – to rule out arthritis
  • MRI – to rule out rotator cuff and other soft tissue injuries
